Linus was running up the sidewalk screaming, with delight, at the top of his lungs, “SCHOOL IS OVER, SCHOOL IS OVER!” Coming up on Lucy on the side walk, he continues, “I’LL NEVER HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL AGAIN!” Lucy looks at him with a smirk and says, “What do you mean “NEVER “? Summer vacation only last three months you blockhead!” Linus stops, turns and looks at her with a smile and relies, “To someone with my frame of mind, three months Is Never!”
“Everything depends on your perspective. You can choose to lament your limitations and mourn your mistakes, or you can turn your attention to the abilities you do possess and the opportunity each new day provides to fix your faults and failures. You can expend your mental energy anticipating the terrors of tomorrow, or you can determine that you will bask in the blessings of today.” I have been reading again. This time from Rigel Dawson’s book, “The Pastor Is In.” He believes a Battery Drainer can repair their short and become a Battery Charger.
Dawson believes that you have to discipline your spirit to concentrate on the good stuff. The Apostle Paul urges us to “think”on things that are true, noble, right, whatever is right, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, anything excellent or praiseworthy.(Philippians 4:8)
The word“think”in the passage is an accounting term meaning to calculate something. It means you have to train your brain to constantly count and add up your blessings (the positive things that you experience.) And when you’re done…start counting all over again. Do it until this practice becomes a habit, and the habit becomes your character. Soon it will become second nature for you to see the good in all situations and bring contentment to your mental state.
Lucy might say,” Right, easy for you to say, you don’t——.” My quick answer is a question and some facts. When Paul wrote this snippet do you know where he was? In a Roman Prison in winter with no central heat AND awaiting to have His Head Cut Off. So there’s that.
It also helps us to stay away from folks who feel their mission in life is to make sure everyone around them stays “grounded” on their same level of discouragement and defeat. “Listen to me!” Linus would say, “Never allow anyone pull you down when your spirit is high.”
Quit looking forward to the next problem, instead CELEBRATE the blessing of the here-and-now. One invites grumbling and depression with a topping of bitterness of what might have been. The other encourages a gladness that invites us to jump to our feet to embrace what’s right “right now.”
If your head is hangin low this day resolve to stop hugging the negative and start cuddling up to counting your current blessings.
It’s Saturday and I get to cook breakfast with God’s gift to me and share some of my famous grits made with a pinch of love. I’ll serve her eggs, biscuits with apple butter, and crispy bacon. Top it off with a cup of coffee and I’ll get smooches all blessed day. My days is startin right.
If you like it share it, Mr. Dawson and I appreciate it.
