Been Thinkin About “singing the Wizard of Oz.”;
When thinking of vacations with the family, you know what comes to my mind? Nothing! When I was a kid my parents never took a vacation. Not just never took a family vacation but never took a vacation. I didn’t really think about it until I was grown married and had children of my own.
I got that life story thing in the email the other day asking me about vacations and I had to ask for a new question because that page would be blank. Although I did go on a trip with my buddy Kenneth when we were kids. His Dad carried him on a long weekend fishing trip and he asked me if I could come. I did and it rained the entire time we were there. His Dad’s camper fit over the bed of a truck and we never got out because of the rain. It was fun the first 1/2 hour of the first day after that my best buddy became my worst enemy. Being couped up in the back of a pickup truck in the rain is no fun. I will say the trip home was great. So much for vacations, I thought.
So as my family became my wife and 3 children we started carrying them on vacations to the beach, to the mountains, to the places that I sometimes just winged it. Winging it is what I like to do but after a one time trip from Mississippi to Memphis to Nashville to Chattanooga Tn. Jean clipped my rambling wings. Then our kids got married and had kids and we still had our vacations together.
The Holcomb’s had some rules when we went on vacation. The #1 rule was/is sometime within the first mile we all have to sing, “🎵We’re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz.🎶” I know what you’re saying, “doesn’t everybody?”
Another rule is we will stop at any yard sale that Jean wants to stop at.
Rule number next, if we go to the beach Jean and I don’t go to the beach. We’d rather rest in the room or sit and listen to the ocean waters break, ahhh so relaxing. We definitely have a rule that says go out to eat breakfast and a meal of seafood… daily.
The reason I tell you this is my whole family, (Jean, 3 grown children and mates, 9 grandchildren, 4 grandchildren in love, and 2 Greatgrands, and of course Mr. and Mrs Moses, that’s Jean and I. We are all headed to the beach for the first time in years. I am so sucited (excited), as our children use to say.
Some new rules have been added and I am no longer the ‘decider’ of the rules is the first new rule. They ( the grown children) have got a schedule of who cooks what meal and who cleans up and what we are eating. I looked over that real close and understood the old rules are no longer.
We are all staying in this Huge house on the beach and I understand we have to take pictures wearing the same colors cause we want to remember this trip. O.K.
Now if you think these new rules with the new bosses is me complaining like a “rainy fishing trip in the back of a pickup,” well think again. I am so glad to have the crew back together again. I love my family, all of them. They have different personalities, opinions, different faults, but it always comes down to family. So vacation on the beach here we come.
I gotta say I hope you can do this sometimes. Just to get together and spend time loving on all them differences and telling them so. You see it’s not about the time it’s about what you do with the time. I’m smiling because I’m going on vacation with family.
🎶We’re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz🎵.”
